IDIn infrastructure-related areas such as municipal water management and flood protection, this level of networking is already commonplace amongst technical and operational facilities and systems solely by virtue of their inherent decentralization, and applied by way of technical instrumentation and control installations in physical pipe networks and special facilities.
This has induced us to elaborate a first public statement on the innovative technologies provided in the realm of largely municipal infrastructures. Is the digitalization of local authorities perhaps even ahead of that in industry?
Under the heading MUNICIPAL 4.0, we will intensively pursue this, both in the eponymous funded project and beyond, and show that many developments akin to INDUSTRY 4.0 are already being implemented in the area of public infrastructures today. The potentials we are expecting from this for a more intelligent and efficient management and „better, more economic“ use of resources are just as enormous as they are in industry. They enable municipal enterprises to increase their efficiency without compromising the end result and safety, in order to continue providing the public with cost-efficient and favourably priced infrastructure services.
The industrial demand leads to an increasing standardization, and an awareness of the need for comprehensive IT security. Stuxnet in 2010 marked the beginning of an intensified discussion of IT security in automation. This now concerns the success factor of „sensitive infrastructures“, and not only since the IT Security Act has come into power in July 2015.
With the present articles about MUNICIPAL 4.0 - we wish to enter into a dialogue with you about the benefits and potentials of networking and the required IT security, to pick up on new suggestions and stimuli for this from the user and market side, and to provide you with our feedback.
Help to ensure that local authorities and infrastructure operations continue to set the bar in networked management and security by contributing your ideas for intelligent applications. Become a part of MUNICIPAL 4.0, the digitalization offensive for the municipal water industry.
I wish you an enjoyable read!
